Parent Update:
New Center Coming in June!
A lot of you know this has been a long time coming—we’ve been working for years to bring a larger childcare facility to Atchison.Thanks to a grant from the State of Kansas and a partnership with St. Benedict’s Abbey, we’re excited to share that construction is nearly complete on our new center.
As we step into this next season, we want to say thank you. Your support, patience, and grace throughout this process have meant more than you know. Over the coming months, there will be continued changes as new staff are hired, construction wraps up, and we settle into a new rhythm—and we’re so grateful to be walking through it with families like yours.
We know you’ll have questions, so we’ve put together the FAQs below to help keep you informed every step of the way.
New Center FAQ
Our new center is at 1926 N. 2nd St, Building 8, Atchison, KS 66002. The facility has room for up to 140 children — plenty of space to grow! We do ask that parents don't drive to the new center just yet, as it is still a construction zone. We will host a First Families open house after construction is complete.
No need to reapply. We will provide a start date for all current families at the new center in June 2026.
Your 2026 tuition rate for the downtown location still applies at the new center. Your payment plan will remain the same in Brightwheel.
Yes! Buses from USD 409 will reroute to the new building, and First Steps transportation to Pre-K will continue to be available at the same fee as before.
We're so glad you asked! We are currently hiring new team members (view at firststepscenters.org/careers) and adding children to our waitlist (firststepscenters.org/waitlist). Please share this news with parents you know!
